There is no single best coding technology. CIJ, CTIJ, TIJ, TTO, Laser, Piezo, UV coders and DOD large-character printers are all excellent when matched to the right application. The right decision depends on substrate, line speed, print height, print content, environment, permanence requirement, uptime expectation and service support.
Short Answer
If your line prints date, batch and MRP on bottles, jars, cans, pipes or irregular products, CIJ is often the practical default. If you need clean, high-resolution text, QR or barcodes on cartons and labels at moderate volume, TIJ can be attractive. If you want TIJ-style print quality but cartridge replacement is becoming a running-cost or uptime problem, CTIJ or bulk-ink TIJ becomes worth evaluating. If you need a permanent consumable-free mark and the substrate responds well, Laser can be powerful. If you print on flexible films, pouches or flow-wrap material, TTO is usually the strongest professional solution.
What CIJ Does Best
Continuous Inkjet is a flexible non-contact technology used across food, beverage, pharma, FMCG, cable, pipe and general manufacturing. It handles fast-moving products and uneven surfaces better than many alternatives.

The hidden cost is usually not the machine. It is ink, make-up fluid, cleaning, filters, service discipline and downtime.
What TIJ Does Best
Thermal Inkjet is compact, clean and high-resolution. It can produce sharp text, logos, QR codes and barcodes when the substrate and ink are suitable. It is usually simpler to maintain because the cartridge often contains the printhead.

The risk is cartridge economics. Yield, dry-out, print coverage and operator practice decide the real cost.
What CTIJ Does Best
CTIJ is best understood as bulk-ink thermal inkjet: it keeps the simplicity and print quality benefits of TIJ, but feeds ink from a larger external or cassette-style supply so high-volume lines are not constantly changing small cartridges. This is the gap many factories feel between cartridge TIJ and CIJ.
There are two broad CTIJ styles to evaluate:
- Gravity-fed bulk TIJ systems, such as the Rynan-style bulk ink approach you mentioned, where the attraction is simpler ink supply and lower cartridge dependency.
- Automated/smart bulk ink systems, such as MapleJet Hx Ultro, where the supplier positions the system for lower operational cost on high-volume lines, reduced cartridge replacement, high-resolution codes and production monitoring features.
CTIJ works well when regular TIJ print quality is attractive, but the plant needs better ink economy, fewer interventions and longer continuous running. It should still be tested carefully for ink compatibility, printhead life, priming, idle recovery, throw distance and service support.
What Laser Does Best
Laser marking is strong when permanence, code quality and reduced ink handling matter. It can be excellent on PET, glass, cartons, selected plastics, labels and metals after proper testing.

Laser is not automatic magic. It needs substrate trials, safety guarding, extraction and correct wavelength/power selection.
What TTO Does Best
Thermal Transfer Overprinting is usually the best fit for flexible packaging. It prints high-resolution variable data on films, pouches, flow-wraps, labels and tags.

What Piezo Printers Do Best
Piezo industrial printers use piezoelectric printheads, commonly from Xaar, Seiko or Ricoh class head families. They are strong where wider print, higher resolution, variable data or robust ink delivery is needed beyond simple cartridge TIJ. They are common in carton, corrugated, packaging, industrial marking and some wide-format coding applications.
The risk is technical support quality. Printhead care, ink compatibility, waveform tuning, maintenance discipline and supplier competence matter heavily.
What UV Coders Do Best
UV coders use UV-curable inks and are often seen in wider print-height applications such as 53mm, 70mm and 108mm print bands. They can produce sharp, durable marks where ink adhesion and quick curing are important, but they need proper curing, safety, lamp/LED maintenance and ink-substrate testing.
What DOD / Large-Character Printers Do Best
Drop-on-demand large-character printers are used where the code must be big and readable: corrugated shippers, cement bags, woven sacks, wood, building materials and porous industrial packs. In cement and dusty industries, rugged mounting, nozzle protection, dust handling and readability are more important than brochure print resolution.

- Use actual line speed and real print content.
- Check service response in your location.
- Compare uptime, reject risk and consumables, not only machine price.
- Ask the vendor where the technology does not work well.
