The Formula
OEE = Availability x Performance x Quality
Availability asks: was the line running during planned production time Performance asks: did it run at the ideal rate while running Quality asks: how much output was good the first time
The calculator uses: Shift Length minus Planned Breaks = Planned Production Time. Then it separates stop-time loss, speed loss and quality loss.
Step 1: Availability
Availability = Run Time / Planned Production Time
If planned production time is 420 minutes and downtime is 70 minutes, run time is 350 minutes. Availability is 350 / 420 = 83.3%.
Packaging availability losses include coder fault, film change, label roll change, conveyor jams, compressed air issues, changeover, cleaning and waiting for material.
Step 2: Performance
Performance = Actual Output / Theoretical Output During Run Time
If the line should run at 100 packs per minute for 350 minutes, theoretical output is 35,000 packs. If actual output is 28,000 packs, performance is 80%.
Speed loss is often hidden because the line is technically running, but operators slow it down to avoid jams, bad seals, missed codes or unstable transfers.
Step 3: Quality
Quality = Good Count / Total Count
If total output is 28,000 packs and 700 require rejection or rework, good output is 27,300. Quality is 97.5%.
Packaging quality losses include wrong code, missing code, label skew, underweight/overweight rejection, poor sealing, damaged cartons and unreadable barcodes.
